Country
profile
The
homeland of the brave Gurkhas and the country of great
Himalayas, Nepal has diversified cultural people living
together in peace and harmony. It has produced good fighting
soldiers and has been the pride of the Royal British Army
since World War I. Their honesty, loyalty and good fighting
spirit have been the hallmark of their career and have
maintained since then. British Army first hired Nepalese
Gurkhas to join the military forces establishing a regiment
called the Gurkha regiment in 1815. Legendary iin courage,
determination and honesty demonstrated by Gurkha soldiers in
the World War I and II, make Gurkhas and Nepalese a synonym of
bravery, courage and honesty.
Nepal,
geographically hilly and a semi-mountainous country with
diverse climate and altitudinal variations has its 90% of the
people making their livelihood through agriculture. Nepalese
have to be exceptionally fit to be able to work on their
farms. Their physical movements in hills and mountain and ups
and downs have concretized their strength and vitality. Apart
from their superior physical resistance, Nepalese workers are
considered to be one of the most honest and disciplined in the
world.
The very name ‘Gurkha’ is a byword for courage and
steadfastness, but quite why the Gurkhas possess these
qualities in such abundance is perhaps less widely
appreciated. The Gurkha’s resultant simple upbringing in a
harsh environment (where survival to adulthood is in itself an
achievement), his strong sense of loyalty fostered by the
intense bonds of family, village and society, sticism in
adversity and his innate cheerfulness give him so many of the
characteristics of being the natural soldier.
